After an accident
Can I Choose My Own Body Shop in California?
September 14, 2026 · 5 min read
When an accident is already interrupting your week, being told to choose a shop can feel like another thing to get wrong. California gives you that choice for covered collision damage; your insurer still handles the policy decision.
The repair-shop choice is yours.
California drivers may choose the auto body repair shop they want to use for covered collision damage. An insurer can recommend a shop, but cannot require a specific facility.
Choosing the shop does not settle the claim. Your insurer still reviews coverage and authorization under your policy.
Choose for the repair in front of you.
After an accident, get safe, document what happened, and report the claim if one is involved. Then look for a shop that can handle the repair you actually have.
Bravada specializes in small-to-medium collision repair, including bumper damage, panels, paint damage, refinishing, and color-match work.
Know what the paperwork should show.
California consumer guidance says you are entitled to an itemized written estimate and a detailed invoice after the repair. Those documents identify the parts and labor in the repair and the total price for the work performed.
If a part is replaced, ask the shop to explain the part type in plain language. The paperwork should identify parts as new, used, aftermarket, reconditioned, or rebuilt when those categories apply.
Use the first call as a comfort check.
You do not need to know the right repair method before calling a shop. You do need to feel that someone is listening to the damage you can see, the information you already have, and the questions you are trying to sort out.
A good first conversation should make the next step clearer. Ask who will inspect the vehicle, what information is useful to bring, and how the shop handles updates if the repair scope changes.
Bring the information you have.
Bring the claim number and adjuster information if you have them, along with the vehicle details, visible damage, and photos. Bravada works with all major insurers and can keep the repair-side information organized with the adjuster.
California consumer guidance also covers itemized estimates and detailed final invoices. If inspection reveals additional damage, Bravada will explain what was found before work moves forward.
